Lincoln City : Interesting Facts, History & Information

Lincoln, Alabama is a city in Talladega County located around 25 miles east of Birmingham. It had a population of 5,228 as of the 2010 census. Originally founded as a railroad town, the city’s economy is now mostly based on manufacturing and retail.

The area around Lincoln was originally inhabited by the Muscogee people, who settled along nearby Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers. Part of the area was also known as “Cherokee Town”, due to the small number of Cherokee that settled in the area. In 1832, the area was opened to European-American settlement and was quickly developed.

The settlement of Lincoln itself was founded in 1868 after J.D. Roberts and a group of investors purchased 244 acres of land and laid out plans for a town. The city soon became a stop on the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia Railroad. By 1890, the population had grown to 1,339.

During the 20th century, manufacturing became increasingly important to the city’s economy. The 1950s saw the construction of a hosiery factory that was subsequently purchased by a major national retailer. During the 1970s and 80s, the city experienced some growth, including the establishment of a community college in 1988.

Throughout its history, Lincoln has been a friendly and welcoming place to live. The city still hosts several cultural events annually, including the Chasing Fireflies Festival in the summer.
