Jasper is the county seat of Walker County in Alabama and it is located in the northwest part of the state, near the Tennessee border. It is less than 75 miles from Birmingham and 45 miles from Huntsville. As of the 2019 census, the population was 14,191.

Jasper is located in the middle of the Appalachian Mountain Range and the city is surrounded by the Mountain Ranges of Bankhead, Warrior and Sipsey. In 1815, William Potter purchased the area and set up the first post office in 1821. The town of Jasper was established on December 18, 1823. The town was named after the American Revolutionary War hero, Sergeant William Jasper.

The town quickly grew into a thriving community and it soon became one of the most important stops along the stagecoach line. The Alabama & Chattanooga Railroad came to town in 1881 and that triggered a period of economic growth and growth for the city. By the early 1900s, the city was home to five banks, two hotels, several stores, a theater and a medical clinic.

During the late 1900s, a major textile mill located in Jasper transformed it into a center for the production of woolen goods. It also helped to make Jasper one of the most economically successful small cities in Alabama.
