It was formerly believed to be the central residence of the royal ruler of Mysore who ruled here from about 1399 to 1950. The first palace was formed, of sandalwood which was, destroyed and a new castle was built, as the palace. The kingdom of Mysore was taken over by Wadiyar Raja by Hyder Ali’s son Tipu Sultan in 1793 during whose reign this palace was, molded into the Muslim architectural style. When Tipu Sultan died in 1799, five-year-old Prince Krishnaraja Wadiyar III of the Wadiyar dynasty was seated on the throne. After which he rebuilt the palace in the Hindu architectural style which was completed by 1803.

In 1897, during the marriage ceremony of Princess Jayalakshmani, this castle caught fire, due to which the entire palace was, ruined. Queen Kempa Nanjamani Devi appointed the famous British architect Henry Irwin to rebuild it. Henry Irwin started building, the castle in 1897 and after about 15 years it was completed in 1912 and handed over to the queen. At that time 41.47 lakh rupees were spent to build this palace. The Mysore palace is 245 feet long and 156 feet wide. The gold dome inside it is situated, at a height of 145 feet from the ground. A total of 97000 bulbs are installed to illuminate it.
