Gadsden is a city located in Etowah County in the northeastern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. It is located on the Coosa River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 36,856 at the 2010 census. Gadsden is the county seat of Etowah County, and is part of the Gadsden–Anniston Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The first European-American settlement in what is now Gadsden was established in 1826 or 1827 by John Riley, a mixed-race Creek Indian trader from Georgia. He moved his trading post to the site of present-day Gadsden after the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1821, which opened up land in the Western Creek Nation for sale to European Americans. This area was historically occupied by members of the historic Creek and Cherokee tribes.

Gadsden was incorporated as a city in 1867, and by the 1920s it had become an important industrial center in the southeastern United States. Steel, textiles, and metal working were important to the city’s return from the Great Depression. It was once known as the “Loom City of the South” due to the number of factories in the city.

Gadsden is home to one of Alabama’s largest industries, Goodyear Tire and Rubber. The Goodyear factory, the Denso Corporation (formerly Nippondenso), and Gadsden Regional Medical Center are also major employers in the area.
