Fultondale, AL is a city located in the north-central part of the state, in Jefferson County. With a population of just over 8,000 people in 2020, it is a small town with a notable sense of community pride.

Fultondale was settled in the early 1800s by the families of James and William Fulton. It achieved its first official incorporation in 1949, and it has since grown to encompass more than 5 square miles of land.

The city was heavily damaged by an F3 tornado in 1998, leaving behind significant destruction and damage. The town was able to quickly rebuild and flourish, however, leaving it stronger than before the tornado.

Fultondale has several notable attractions that draw visitors from the surrounding areas. The Fultondale Century Plaza shopping center is a popular destination and showcases over 40 stores and restaurants, along with a movie theater. 4. Fultondale is the location of the famous Black Creek Pleasure Park, built in the early 1940s. Black Creek Pleasure Park was home to the world’s first bungee tower – the Spring Hill Tower – making it the birthplace of bungee jumping.

5. Fultondale is also home to Birmingham’s only racetrack, Alabama International Dragway. The track was established in 1963 and still holds drag races to this day.

6. The first steel mill in Jefferson County was located on the western edge of Fultondale. The mill operated from 1892 to 1927 and was responsible for the early growth of the city.

7. The Fultondale Fire Department was founded in 1938 and is home to the city’s only fire truck.

8. Fultondale is home to one of the oldest churches in Jefferson County, Calvary Baptist Church, which was established in 1872.

9. Fultondale was the site of the Birmingham-Fultondale Balloon Launch in 1895, the first hot air balloon launch in Alabama.
