Fairfield is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It was incorporated in 1947 and is located immediately west of Birmingham. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 11,117, up from 9,720 at the 2000 census.

The city was founded in 1904 by the Fairfield Land and Cattle Company, and named after nearby Fairfield Corners. It was incorporated in 1947. In the 1950s, the city saw a large population increase due to the influx of African-American workers moving to the city for work in the steel mills. Fairfield continues to be a diverse city and in 2020, was named one of Alabama’s “Up and Coming Communities.”

Today Fairfield is a vibrant city and boasts numerous parks, a public library, a revitalized historic downtown, and a focus on green space. The city has a number of annual events, including a July 4th celebration, the Freedom 5K, Fairfield Citywide Back 2 School Bash, and the Citywide Clean Up Day every spring.
