Chalco is a small city located in Douglas County, Nebraska. The city was originally known as Lake No. 3 in the early 1800s, and then later changed to Chalco after a lake and park located nearby. The name Chalco is an alteration of the Omaha Indian word "calko," meaning "lake of plenty." The city was first officially established and platted in April 1947, but had already been populated since the mid-19th century. Chalco was largely farming town prior to World War II, but its population began to increase as industries like a machine shop and a beer can factory opened in the area. The city is located just south of Omaha, and the population growth eventually turned the area into a bedroom community for those working in Omaha. Despite its small size, Chalco has several amenities such as parks, baseball and softball diamonds, and pavilions, as well as a library, fire station, and grocery store.
