Dunlap City : Interesting Facts, History & Information

Dunlap is a small village located in Otoe County, Nebraska. The village is home to about 135 people, making it a small, rural community. The-village was originally established as a stagecoach stop in 1866. When the railroad was constructed nearby in 1878, the village moved to its current site. Initially, the primary industries in the village were the grain elevator and the creamery. The village is named after Aaron Dunlap, one of the first settlers in the area. He arrived in Otoe County in 1860 and built a cabin at the present-day site of Dunlap. Another of the first settlers, George W. Walbridge, also played a role in the early development of the village. He donated land to build a school in 1878, and later that same year, the first church was built. Throughout its history, Dunlap has remained a small village that is focused on agriculture. The local economy has historically been based on grain production, but the village also has a service sector that provides goods and services to the community. In addition to a few stores in the village, several local businesses offer home repair, auto repair, and other services. Unfortunately, the turn of the 21st century saw the decline of some of the village's main industries, such as the grain elevator. As a result, many of the village's businesses have closed, leaving the village with only a few local establishments. Despite its small size, the village remains active in many ways, such as art and music events, celebrations, and sports.
