Rome is located in the northwestern portion of Georgia, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is the largest city and the county seat of Floyd County. Rome was founded in 1834 as a trading post at the confluence of the Etowah and Oostanaula River. The city’s name comes from the seven hills of Rome.

The area was populated by Native Americans for hundreds of years prior to the arrival of European settlers. After the Indian Removal Act of 1830, much of the Native American population in the area was forcibly relocated. During the American Civil War, Rome was a major center for Confederate military activity, and suffered some damage from Union forces.

The city was a manufacturing and agricultural center before the development of the cotton, textile, and paper mill industry beginning in the late 19th century. This helped to grow the city, and by the 1950s Rome was the third largest city in Georgia.

Rome has a historic downtown district with many historic homes, churches, and commercial buildings, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rome is also home to the world-famous Little Richard House, built by the singer’s father in 1932.
