History & Information of Redan, GA
Redan is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans in the area, it was home to Creek Indians of the Muskogee Nation. By 1820, a post office and settler’s store was already established there. The community was named for the red clay soil in the area. Following the Civil War, a cluster of free African-American families, led by brothers George and Junius Herrin, settled in the Redan area, working as farmers.
In the late 20th century, downtown Redan was faced with a number of problems, including abandoned buildings and buildings with peeling paint. To revitalize the area, a volunteer organization, Focus Inc., was created in the 1990s. With the help of local civic organizations and churches, the group was able to address the situation, restoring the town’s historic buildings, encouraging development of new businesses, and helping to establish a sense of community in the area.
Today, Redan is mostly residential and features a few businesses, including churches, restaurants, and grocery stores. It is served by United States Postal Service, with two post offices in the area. Redan is located on the southwest side of DeKalb County and is 14 miles from the city of Decatur.
