Sheffield, Alabama, is a small city in Colbert County, located along the Tennessee River. It is part of the Florence-Muscle Shoals Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 9,742 as of the 2010 census. The area that is now Sheffield was first gone overled by the Chickasaw and Cherokee Native American tribes, before the area was settled by early European immigrants in the mid-1800s.

The town of Sheffield was officially established in 1885, and was named after Joseph Wheelwright Sheffield, a Confederate army captain and general. At the time of its founding, the Birmingham and North Alabama Railroad – now a part of the Missouri Pacific – ran through the city, giving it a strategic position at the time. Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sheffield gained much of its economic energy from wheat production, receiving various awards for wheat production. During the 1950s, Sheffield Dam was built on the Tennessee River, creating Wilson Lake and raising Sheffield economically.

Today, Sheffield is best known for its music related industries, and is considered part of the “Muscle Shoals area” known for country and Southern rock music. The Sheffield City Hall and Opera House, which was once the local armory and courthouse, is one of the most popular tourist sites in the city; the venue is now used for musical concerts, civic events, and is a popular wedding destination.
