Guntersville is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. It is located on the banks of Guntersville Lake in the north-central part of the state and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 8,197.

In the early 19th century, south-central Alabama, along with areas around modern day Guntersville, was part of the Cherokee Nation in the Southeast. Its people were among the last Native Americans to be removed by the US government in the early 1830s for Indian Removal. The area that is now Guntersville was named for John Gunter, an Englishman who became an early settler and cotton gin manufacturer. The city was incorporated in 1848 and holds the distinction of being the oldest incorporated town in Marshall County.

Today, Guntersville is the largest city in the county and is the center of economic activity. The city’s economy is based largely on tourism and agriculture, with the agricultural workforce drawing on local poultry and cattle ranches, along with some small-scale farming. The tourist economy is largely centered around fishing and hunting, especially given the area’s abundance of lakes and streams.
