The Johnsontown Archaeological Site is located in Smyrna, GA and it has been an American archaeological research site since 1930. The site has undergone extensive excavation and research conducted by the Atlanta Archaeological Society and the Atlanta History Center. The site contains artifacts and remains from the Middle Woodland period (1-500 AD), the Late Woodland period (500-1600 AD) and the Historic period (1600-1800’s). The artifacts suggest that the site was once occupied by Native Americans and the researchers have been exploring the cultural and environmental context of the Johnsontown site in order to piece together a story of the lives and customs of these early Native Americans.
The site consists of a large mound and several smaller mounds and was likely used as an earthworks by Native Americans.
